The third phase of Step Up To Net Zero (SUTNZ) is now well underway! We welcomed our Net Zero Coordinators at our first event of the programme – designed to spark meaningful conversations and build connections amongst the group. This is a really important part of SUTNZ, where we focus on upskilling and reskilling our participants in aspects of sustainability, circularity and the green economy.

We were delighted to be hosted by The Pyramid at Anderston, an iconic community space in the heart of the city and one of the organisations proudly participating in this phase of SUTNZ. With its deep roots in social impact and community engagement, The Pyramid provided an inspiring setting for an afternoon of learning and reflection.

A Diverse Cohort with Shared Ambition

The event began with introductions and a chance to get to know the wide range of sectors represented in the programme. From architectural firms and creative marketing agencies to food suppliers and vegan skincare companies, the diversity of businesses reflected the richness of Glasgow’s SME landscape.

Despite their varied backgrounds, participants quickly uncovered shared challenges; such as limited resources, time constraints, and the need to engage teams effectively in sustainability efforts. A strong sense of openness and eagerness to learn from one another emerged, laying the foundation for a collaborative network that will grow throughout the programme.

Confidence and Communication as Catalysts for Change

Our first session was led by Tina Coviello of Progressive Pathways, an organisation dedicated to nurturing personal and professional growth. Tina and the team have supported each phase of SUTNZ, providing participants with valuable mentoring and support. Through a creative, self-reflective activity, participants explored how others perceive them and how this awareness can be harnessed to build confidence in their roles. The session was a powerful reminder that sustainability leadership begins with self-awareness and the ability to communicate purpose with clarity.

Practical Tools for Real-World Impact

Following this, Adam Bastock, Founder of Small99, delivered a practical and honest workshop focused on the realities of engaging teams in sustainability. Adam addressed common barriers; such as financial and resource constraints, and offered actionable advice for embedding sustainability in ways that are both achievable and impactful.

His tips included:

  • Implementing energy efficiency measures to reduce costs and environmental impact
  • Choosing train travel over domestic flights and using travel time for remote work
  • Identifying “quick wins” that can build momentum for longer-term change

Adam’s session resonated with participants, offering them tools and insights they could immediately apply at each of their businesses and organisations.

Early Progress and Growing Momentum

Although only a few weeks into the programme, many participants are already making meaningful progress on their action plans. From calculating carbon emissions and developing reduction plans to finding smart waste management solutions and embedding circular economy principles, the impact is already being felt in each business.

This event signalled the emergence of a growing network built on shared ideas, cross-sector collaboration, and a collective commitment to sustainability. It reflects Glasgow’s spirit of innovation and cooperation, showing how we can support local businesses, strengthen the economy, and protect the planet together.
